This is how two institutions look in Big Sky country. I went into both. Had to buy some toiletries, almost bought a bb pistol, changed my mind. Had a large vanilla shake at McDonald's- around the tenth I've had on this trip. For the record, I have not eaten a single meal at McDonald's. (So, ha! You know who you are.)
It was 45 miles from Forsyth to here, Miles City. (I can't decide if I've heard of Miles City, Montana, before. Doesn't it sound familiar?) It has been 360 miles since I last saw a franchise of any kind.
The length of my days has, in fact, been determined by where the next habitable town lies. In Washington, and even eastern Montana, I could shorten or lengthen the day by choice of stops. The last six days I've simply gotten on my bike in the morning and ridden to the very next town- 45, or 80, or 100 miles away.
Today's ride was hot, and up and down continuous 200 foot hills, but short enough to provide me with extra time to rest.
Montana has been beautiful, but monotonous. The people have been friendly, but more reserved. Spending most nights in a motel keeps me pretty isolated, so I might get back into some campgrounds. But it's just so nice to sleep in a bed, watch TV, take a shower. I must start a debate: comfort verses adventure. Feel free to join.

Von says adventure by day.... comfort at night.
That's a tough one (I like the typo: "verses" instead of "versus", choir boy). Would have to say adventure...but easy for me to say as I sit comfortably in a Woodstock internet cafe, drinking an iced latte, eating my fruit-yogurt-granola and honey combo, listening to Euro pop and debating whether I should buy another pair of over-priced "Seven" jeans in the boutique next door or head to the guitar shop for some new strings...or uh...look for a job. Hmmmm...decisions, decisions.
ADVENTURE - you have the entire school year for comfort.
Jimmy would been surprised that you weren't already "pack'in". I leave for Alaska tomorrow. I hope to see you on the way back.
Ummm...three to one...I say, the majority speaks the truth. Besides, even though it's not a meal, stopping in for a shake 60% of the days you've been on the road actually speaks in our favor. However, on this trip, you deserve to eat whatever you want without ridicule...so I hope you have an opportunity to to stop at McD's any day you want. I vote for adventure too!
Comfort, comfort, COMFORT!!!
