75 miles into the wind. I won't say anything more except I started this ride at noon and arrived in Ipswich at 9:30pm. I wish I had more pictures of this motel. It used to be a small hospital. Imagine the front desk and hallways- you're exactly right. It was quiet and clean, and I especially liked the complimentary sponge bath.
The map of South Dakota lies. Or I wouldn't make a good cartographer. Straight lines mean.. flat, right? Wrong. In this case it means they just didn't bother traversing the rolling hills. At the end of today I was both exhausted and relieved. This was one of the less enjoyable days of the trip, but it was over.
For the last ten miles I tried to see if I could zone out while riding. There were hardly any cars around, and the road was straight and flat. Part of the trouble with the wind is that it makes the scenery go by so slowly. Given the rules of perspective I decided to focus on what appeared to be the fastest moving thing- the ground directly underneath me. Well, just ahead of my front tire. I only need look up occasionally to avoid roadkill. In addition, I listened to my chorus, Capital Community Voices, on my iPod. I'm not sure why really.
It all helped. A little. I made it.
