Mr. Science Prevails...?

In my struggle to keep cool, I stopped on this bridge. This was the closest I came to any water all day. I couldn't work my way down to the banks, but I needed to reach that water. I had a plan.
I have been carrying a length of clothesline, and it would finally be useful. I tied one end to a pair of long wool socks I had yet to use as well, and lowered them over the side of the bridge. At full length they dangled about two feet above the surface. I pulled the socks back up and searched my packs for something to help. I took out the USB cord that charges my iPod and attached it to the end of the clothesline. This time the socks touched the water, just barely, and after I dunked them as much as I could, I pulled them up again. The outside of the socks were damp at best. Next I tied my phone charger to the cable, and dropped the socks over the side one last time. Finally, very wet socks.
At this point I had one bottle of water and it was beyond warm. I shoved the bottle down into th wet socks, crammed it into the bottle cage, packed up, and took off.
My theory was that the evaporating water-drenched socks would pull the heat from the bottle.
Patiently, I waited about 15 minutes. I stopped and took a drink. No difference. 30 minutes. Nope.
Finally, late in the dayn the water was much cooler. Of course, it could have been the fact that the sun had gone down.
