In Mobridge at the MoRest Motel. After crossing Lake Oahe, I had officially left the Standing Rock reservation. I asked my host the other night what percentage of people on the reservation were Indians. He said it was about 50/50. Years ago, some of the tribe sold off their share of the land. Each member got a certain amount, and if you then had 25 descendants, your land would all be shared by them. So some Indians sold part of what they had at the time, I guess figuring it was easiest to make the decision when it was still all their own. Eventually the U.S. government put a stop to the sales. Whites who had previously bought the land still retained ownership.
Crossing the Missouri River here also put me into the Central Time Zone, so I lost another hour of the day.
The other picture here shows how little rain there has been, even though the locals tell me how green everything is this year. This section of the lake has nothing but dead trunks sticking out of the dry bottom. I've been told that compared to last year the lake is many feet higher. Well, the part of the lake that has water.
