I've never had to use it. So far this trip I've only been chased once. The dog came flying out of his backyard, barking, and when he realized he could probably catch me he stepped it up a notch and shot right out of the driveway into the road. Luckily for both of us there were no cars around. The danger is not so much getting bit, but hitting the dog and swerving or falling into traffic.
If I couldn't outrun the dog yelling, ''Go!'' over my shoulder, then I could dismount and use the bike as a shield. The former worked this time.
