I can summarize the past two riding days as if they were only one. And likely tomorrow will be the same.
The wind does not always blow from the west. The wind has fun blowing whichever way it wants. There has been no pattern to the climate, geography, and wind direction. I must admit that it has helped me a few times: the 100 mile day into Spokane, and a couple of day ago in and out of the canyon.
But in these wide open high plains..
For the past two mornings I have thought the same thing, and if you believe in the power of jinxes, add this to your anedotal evidence. I was sure I would have a huge day because of the beautiful west winds blowing. But that wind fools you, gets you out on the road, past the point of no return, and wheee! spins around right into your face. At one point after this happened I stopped the bike and checked my maps and GPS. I thought that maybe I had gotten turned around, maybe in a daze...
So I just keep pedaling, uphill and downhill, trying not to think about the wind rumbling past my ears. What do you do when you don't like a noise your car is making? I do the same- crank up the iPod.
