Trip 2.14

Long day. More headwind. More flat. And even when Delaware turned into Maryland turned into Virginia, still quite boring.

At one point the GPS took me through some pretty backroads.

And eventually I crossed the Mason-Dixon.

After 50 miles I pulled into a motel, went to the desk, and asked for a room. Too much. Back on the road I was making calculations to balance the equation of how tired I was, how many miles I've completed, and how much I wanted to spend.

Later, I pulled into the welcome center to relieve myself, and a helpful woman, representing Virginia, asked me if I needed accommodations. I told her I didn't want to bike too much farther for the day. She said the closest motels were almost 30 miles south. It was just after five o'clock. One option was to find a spot close by, pitch a tent, and go to sleep sweaty and hungry. The other was to ride.

I rode. And later, sitting down to veal parmigiana at a diner across the street from the cheap motel, I felt I had made the right choice.
