This is the first official published announcement that the second leg of my round-the-states tour is this summer. Okay, so I said the same thing about this time last year, and the year before that. And I've been sick since Thanksgiving, and have barely been in the gym since then. But it's January, and the trip will start at the end of June. So, plenty of prep time.
This trip is North-South. I had wanted to start at the northern most point of Maine, but it's simply too remote. I don't have the funds that would charter a plane, and I don't know if I would even find any roads when I got there. I'm satisfied with my second choice-- Lubec, Maine. It is the northernmost point of the United States on the Atlantic coast. I have a feeling it will be a beautiful place to begin.
And the end? Key West. I found out bicycles are allowed to travel the bridges through the Keys, so I'm going all the way.
This journey will be nothing like the last. I know that. Four years ago (four years?!) I could pedal over fifty miles without seeing any signs of civilization. My only companions were occasional cars, and cows. For most of this trip I believe I'll see no more than five miles of desolation at a time. There are a lot of plusses: choices of motels, food, supplies, will be more plentiful. The negatives: civilization, mostly in the form of traffic, worn roads, and New Yorkers.
It will be scary. It will be slow. It will be frustrating. It will be great.
